General information; not independently clinically reviewed. How we prepare our guides.

Understand chronic kidney disease and why dietary advice is individual, with practical ways to organise meals, medicines, symptoms and test dates.

Kidney care often involves results you cannot feel. A clearer everyday record can sit alongside those tests, helping you remember questions rather than trying to interpret the numbers alone.

Understanding Chronic kidney disease (CKD)

Chronic kidney disease means lasting kidney damage or reduced kidney function. Early disease may cause no symptoms. Blood and urine tests help assess it, and care depends on its cause, stage and other health conditions. [1]

Care and everyday food decisions

Treatment may include blood-pressure or other medicines and management of complications. Salt, fluid, potassium, phosphate and protein advice must fit your results and treatment; do not impose a generic 'kidney diet'. Ask a renal dietitian what needs to change for you. [2]

Keeping a useful personal record

Record meals, prescribed medicines and the measurements or test results your team has asked you to keep. Note swelling, appetite changes or practical difficulty following advice. One Food Forward can organise those observations, but it cannot calculate kidney function or decide that a food is safe for your potassium level.

Does everyone with CKD need to avoid the same foods?

No. Needs differ with test results, disease stage and treatment. Ask for a clear, personal plan rather than copying another person's restrictions. [1] [2]

Keep the details somewhere you can find them

There is no need to tell the whole story at once. Start with today’s meal, a symptom or a few words about how you felt. Those small entries give you something to return to when it is time to talk about your care.
