General information; not independently clinically reviewed. How we prepare our guides.

Learn what atrial fibrillation means, why stroke prevention matters, and how to keep useful symptom, medicine and everyday health notes.

A fluttering heartbeat can be unsettling, especially when it comes and goes. A clear record can help you describe the experience, while the medical assessment answers what is happening.

Understanding Atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation is a heart rhythm problem in which the heartbeat is irregular and may be fast. Some people notice palpitations, tiredness or breathlessness; others have no symptoms. An ECG can help diagnose it. The condition can increase stroke risk. [1]

Care and everyday food decisions

Care may involve medicines or procedures to manage the rhythm or rate, and treatment to reduce stroke risk when indicated. Ask your clinician how alcohol, other medicines and your usual routines fit the plan. A normal-feeling day does not mean prescribed treatment is unnecessary. [1]

Keeping a useful personal record

Note the time and duration of symptoms, what you were doing and medicines taken as prescribed. If you record a pulse or other measurement, keep its method and context. One Food Forward cannot interpret an ECG, confirm an irregular rhythm or decide whether an anticoagulant is needed.

Can I stop stroke-prevention medicine when palpitations settle?

Do not stop it without the prescriber's advice. Symptom improvement does not establish that your stroke risk has gone away. [1]

Keep the details somewhere you can find them

There is no need to tell the whole story at once. Start with today’s meal, a symptom or a few words about how you felt. Those small entries give you something to return to when it is time to talk about your care.
