General information; not independently clinically reviewed. How we prepare our guides.

Recognise stroke as an emergency and understand how practical meal, symptom and treatment notes can support rehabilitation after professional assessment.

After a stroke, progress may be found in something as familiar as a shared meal. Recovery is individual, and the record should support the person rather than set a timetable for them.

Understanding Stroke

A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is disrupted, damaging brain tissue. Sudden face drooping, arm weakness or speech difficulty are emergency signs. Call for help immediately; do not wait for symptoms to improve or record them first. [1]

Care and everyday food decisions

After emergency treatment, rehabilitation may address movement, speech, swallowing and other needs. Follow the swallowing and food-texture advice given by the team. Do not offer food or drink during a suspected new stroke while waiting for emergency assessment. [2]

Keeping a useful personal record

Once it is appropriate, record meals following the prescribed plan, fatigue, bowel symptoms and medicines. Keep practical achievements and questions for the rehabilitation team. One Food Forward can organise recovery notes, but cannot assess swallowing safety, detect another stroke or measure neurological recovery.

Should I wait if stroke symptoms disappear?

No. Symptoms that resolve may be a TIA and still need emergency assessment. Call local emergency services immediately for new stroke signs. [1] [2]

Keep the details somewhere you can find them

There is no need to tell the whole story at once. Start with today’s meal, a symptom or a few words about how you felt. Those small entries give you something to return to when it is time to talk about your care.
