Understand systemic sclerosis and keep useful notes about reflux, eating and prescribed treatment alongside specialist monitoring of the whole condition.

A condition that affects connective tissue can touch many parts of everyday life, including the simple business of eating comfortably. Your team needs that wider picture.

Understanding Systemic Sclerosis (Scleroderma)

Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune condition that can affect skin, blood vessels and internal organs. It differs from localised scleroderma. Digestive problems, including reflux or swallowing difficulty, can occur alongside circulation and other symptoms. [1]

Care and everyday food decisions

Treatment aims to manage symptoms, limit progression and identify complications. Regular blood-pressure checks and organ monitoring matter. Ask for help with reflux, swallowing or weight loss rather than relying on food restrictions to manage the whole condition. [1]

Keeping a useful personal record

Record meals, reflux or swallowing symptoms, bowel changes and prescribed medicines. Note the practical effect, such as taking longer to finish a meal. One Food Forward can support a specialist review, but cannot assess organ involvement or determine that a food texture is safe to swallow.

Does less heartburn mean the condition is under control?

It may be a useful improvement, but digestive symptoms are only one part of systemic sclerosis. Keep the monitoring and treatment plan agreed with your specialist. [1]

Keep the details somewhere you can find them

There is no need to tell the whole story at once. Start with today’s meal, a symptom or a few words about how you felt. Those small entries give you something to return to when it is time to talk about your care.
