General information; not independently clinically reviewed. How we prepare our guides.

Understand colorectal cancer care and keep useful notes about bowel changes, eating and treatment, with clear guidance on symptoms that need assessment.

Bowel symptoms are not always easy to talk about. A few plain notes can make the conversation less difficult and help you explain what has changed without having to remember everything.

Understanding Colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer develops in the colon or rectum. Changes in bowel habit, bleeding, pain, unexplained weight loss or tiredness can occur, but these symptoms also have other causes. Persistent changes need assessment rather than self-diagnosis from a food record. [1]

Care and everyday food decisions

Treatment depends on the cancer and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or targeted medicines. Some people need a stoma. Ask your specialist team for eating and bowel-care advice that fits your operation and treatment, and report side effects between appointments. [2]

Keeping a useful personal record

Keep bowel changes, meals, treatment dates and the practical impact on your day together. Record what happened in everyday language, including comfortable meals. One Food Forward can help you explain the history, but it cannot screen for cancer or replace investigations and oncology follow-up.

Can I watch a symptom in my diary before seeking help?

Do not use tracking to postpone assessment. New or persistent bowel symptoms need medical advice, even if you have previously attributed similar symptoms to food. [1] [2]

Keep the details somewhere you can find them

There is no need to tell the whole story at once. Start with today’s meal, a symptom or a few words about how you felt. Those small entries give you something to return to when it is time to talk about your care.
