General information; not independently clinically reviewed. How we prepare our guides.

Understand COPD treatment and keep useful notes about breathlessness, appetite and medicines to support conversations with your respiratory team.

When breathing takes more effort, an ordinary meal can ask more of you too. A clear account of those moments can help your team understand the day beyond a breathing test.

Understanding Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

COPD describes long-term lung conditions that restrict airflow, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Breathlessness, cough, sputum and wheezing are common. A breathing test helps establish the diagnosis, and symptoms can worsen during flare-ups. [1]

Care and everyday food decisions

Treatment can include inhalers, pulmonary rehabilitation and support to stop smoking. Some people need additional treatments. Discuss difficulty eating or unintentional weight change with the team so advice fits your breathing and nutritional needs. [1]

Keeping a useful personal record

Note which activities brought on breathlessness, how meals went and medicines taken as prescribed. Describe a change from your usual pattern, such as needing more breaks during lunch. One Food Forward can support a review, but it cannot measure lung function, diagnose an infection or decide when oxygen is needed.

Should I blame a meal for breathlessness afterwards?

Timing can help describe the problem, but it does not establish the cause. Discuss the pattern with your respiratory team, especially if symptoms are new or worsening. [1]

Keep the details somewhere you can find them

There is no need to tell the whole story at once. Start with today’s meal, a symptom or a few words about how you felt. Those small entries give you something to return to when it is time to talk about your care.
