Understanding Alcohol use disorder

Alcohol use disorder involves drinking that causes harm, difficulty controlling alcohol use or dependence. Cravings, disrupted sleep and withdrawal can be part of the picture. A clinician or addiction service can assess your needs without relying on a diary score. [1]

Care and everyday food decisions

Treatment may combine talking therapy, medicines, practical support and medically supported withdrawal. If you get withdrawal symptoms, seek medical advice before reducing or stopping alcohol: stopping suddenly can be dangerous. Discuss eating difficulties and any prescribed nutritional treatment with your team. [1]

Keeping a useful personal record

If recording helps, keep brief notes about meals, nausea, sleep, prescribed medicines and the support you used that day. Bring a difficult morning or a missed meal into the conversation without turning it into a judgement. One Food Forward can hold those details; it cannot assess withdrawal risk or replace addiction care.

Should I stop drinking immediately?

If you may be dependent or develop withdrawal symptoms, get medical help before trying to stop. Your team can plan a safer approach. A diary is never a withdrawal-management plan. [1]

Keep the details somewhere you can find them

There is no need to tell the whole story at once. Start with today’s meal, a symptom or a few words about how you felt. Those small entries give you something to return to when it is time to talk about your care.
